The Sketchbook - Brian Steelfreeze

Another comics sketch from Atlanta in the early 90's. Brian Stelfreeze was just starting his run doing covers from Batman: Shadow of the Bat. So of course everyone was asking him to draw Batman. We just asked him to draw what ever he wanted. He thought about it a little bit and then said, "Ya know, I really like Predator."

The Sketchbook - Adam Hughes

sktechbook_0011, originally uploaded by The CJM.

Back in the early 90's my dad would take me to comic shows around Atlanta. We started taking a sketchbook with us, 100 sheets of spiral-bound 60 lb. archival paper. It's not a big sketchbook, only 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", so most people didn't even charge us to sketch in it. Our only condition to the artist was to draw whatever they wanted.

In the early 90's Indiana Jones was facing a challenger in the realm of WWII fantasy heroism from The Rocketeer. Adam Hughes decided to poke some fun at this, showing Indy acquiring another "artifact" for his collection. This pencil sketch is amazingly detailed, and he did the whole thing in about 15-20 minutes without any reference. According to his website, Hughes charges $200 for convention sketches these days and no longer does his finishing in pencil, making this free, fully finished pencil sketch extra sweet.

The title says it all.

OPG vs OPG

Toronto rock band Ontario Power Generation was sent a cease-and-desist by provincial nuclear concern Ontario Power Generation. OPG (the band) was getting to be known around town for their geeky one-off cover sets. Star Trek and Street Fighter II are two that have been caught on tape. The story started on local blogs but has now been picked up by the city's tabloid, The Toronto Sun. This isn't the first time a band had to change it's name when it came in conflict with a government agency.
